CENSUS RECORDS OF ENGLAND
Click on the census year above to see a list of people in the KNIFTON family tree who have been traced to the census records for that year.
Although a census has been taken every ten years since 1801 (except in 1941), names were not recorded until 1841. Each census collected information about the occupants of a house in the evening of the census date. Forms were given to each household a few days before the census date. The head of the household was expected to complete the form, noting the details of each person who slept at the house during the night of the census date. The forms were then collected the day after the census date. The details on these forms were then copied into enumerators' books. Unfortunately the original forms completed by the householders from 1841 to 1901 were destroyed.
The information collected should refer to the persons status as of the following dates:
6 June 1841
30 March 1851
7 April 1861
2 April 1871
3 April 1881
5 April 1891
31 March 1901
