John was born at Toadmoor, Heage, and married Mary Ann Varnham in Leicestershire in 1881. John began work as a lorry driver but soon after his marriage he joined the Midland Railway Company as a goods guard. In the evening of 16th August 1905, John was knocked down by a train engine in the Goods Yard at Nottingham, suffered ‘very severe injuries’, and died on the way to hospital.

She was baptised on 18th June 1871 at St Peter’s Church, Belper, and married Alfred Blount at St Alkmund’s Church, Duffield, on 2nd November 1885. Sarah died at 14 Windmill Lane, Belper, on 1st February 1954 aged 87, and was buried at Belper Cemetery on 6th February.

Born towards the end of 1877, Clara Elizabeth was baptised at St Peter’s Church, Belper, on 2nd June 1878. She married John Thomas Mellors on 1st April 1907 at St Peter’s Church, and together they had one child, Douglas William Mellors. Clara died at Parkfields, The Butts, Belper, on 21st August 1954, aged 76, and was buried at Belper Cemetery two days later.

Born at Belper on 24th June 1921, Florence was the oldest child of Herbert Blackham and his first wife Mary Ann (née Green). In 1939, Florence, perhaps known as Mary, was working as a silk reeler in the local textile industry. Florence died on 2nd November 1948, aged 27, and was buried in Belper Cemetery on 4th November.

The daughter of James Green and his wife May Ann (née Holbrook), Mary Ann was born on 25th July 1889 in Belper, and baptised at St Peter’s Church on 6th October in the same year. In 1919 she married Herbert Blackham at Belper and together they had four children. However, Mary died on 9th December 1928, perhaps following the birth of their fifth child, John William Blackham, whose death was registered in the same quarter. She was 39 years old.

Born on 2nd March 1910 at Ambergate, John was the second child of John Berthel Blackham and his wife Amy. He worked as a police constable and as a chemist’s assistant. John died aged 24 and although his memorial records his death as being 26th May 1934, he appears to have died on or around 16th May.

Born at Belper on 26th May 1878, John was working as a cotton spinner by the time he was 12 years old. After working as a labourer for his father, who was stove grate fitter, John became a locomotive engine driver, and on 11th September 1910 he married Elizabeth Ann Beard at Christ Church, Belper. He was a member of Belper Urban Council for 27 years, having joined in 1920, as well as a member of the Ancient Order of Foresters, and a Chief Ranger of the Belper Court. John died on 27th March 1953, aged 74, and was buried at Belper Cemetery four days later.

The sixth and youngest child of John William Blackham and his second wife Lydia (née Dring), Thomas was born at Belper on 7th August 1882. He married Mary Ann Marsden at Christ Church, Belper, on 30th December 1911 and together they had two children. Thomas died on 30th November 1964, aged 82, and was buried at Belper Cemetery on 5th December.

She married Thomas Frank Blackham in Belper, Derbyshire, on 30th December 1911 and together they had two children. Mary died on 19th January 1946, aged 61, and was buried at Belper Cemetery on 22nd January.

Born in the autumn of 1850, Thomas married Harriett Platt at Holy Trinity Church, Milford, Derbyshire, on 11th April 1873. He worked as a bookkeeper and clerk, and later became a grocer. He died on 2nd January 1935, aged 84, and was buried at Belper Cemetery on 5th January. Thomas and Harriett had no children.

Harriett was born at Belper on 22nd August 1852, the daughter of Thomas Marshall Platt and his wife Ann (née Shepherd), who had her baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Milford, on 3rd October. She married Thomas Blackham in 1873, but they had no children. Harriett died on 29th June 1941, aged 88, and was interred at Belper Cemetery on 2nd July.

Born at Crich, Derbyshire, in 1875, William became a clerk and bookkeeper at the local Lime Works, and later worked at Ambergate Wire Works. He died on 7th November 1923, aged 48, and was buried in Belper Cemetery four days later.

The daughter of Anthony Buckley and his wife Ann (née Hardstone), Annie was born at Crich, Derbyshire, on 27th May 1874. She married William Blackham at St Mary’s Church, Crich, on 29th October 1900, and together they had one son, Wilfred. William died in 1923 aged 48 while Annie lived to be 87 years old. She died on 5th April 1962, and was interred on 10th April with her husband at Belper Cemetery.

Born on 15th October 1901 at Heage, Derbyshire, the only child of William and Ann Eliza Blackham, Wilfred was baptised at St Anne’s Church, Ambergate, on 29th June 1902. The family lived on Matlock Road, Heage.

When Wilfred was 22 years old, his father William was found drowned at Ambergate Reservoir, and he moved with his mother to Newbridge Road, Ambergate. Wilfred became known as a good musician and vocalist, and gave up much of his time to many local good causes.

Wilfred died on 15th December 1928 at the Derby Royal Infirmary at the age of 27, leaving his mother and his fiancée, Mary Hayhoe. A service was held in the U.M. (Bethel) Church, Ambergate, on 19th December, during which the hymns Jesu, lover of my soul and Peace, perfect peace were sung, followed by interment at Belper Cemetery.

Born at Belper, William was baptised on 11th April 1877. He served as soldier for 18½ years, mostly in India. He re-enlisted after the outbreak of the First World War, and was serving as a gunner with the 5th Battalion of the Royal Field Artillery regiment when, on 4th December 1917 during a rest, a shell exploded near him, killing William and two other men. He was buried at the Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery in Belgium.

The only child of Arthur and Doris Blackham, John was born on 12th June 1925 in Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire. In 1955 he married Rita Elizabeth Bordiss in the Birmingham area. John died on 2nd July 2011, aged 86, and was buried in the churchyard of St John the Evangelist in Manthorpe, Lincolnshire.

The daughter of William Bradley and his wife Ann (née Shimwell), Elizabeth was born at Alderwasley, Derbyshire, in 1778. On 17th October 1796, Elizabeth married Joseph Blackham at St Alkmund’s Church, Duffield, and together they had eight children. After Joseph’s death in 1826, Elizabeth married Benjamin Gration in 1836, and worked as a grocer and tea dealer. Elizabeth lived to be 92 years old; she died on 14th December 1870 and was interred with her brother George in the churchyard of St Mary’s, Crich.

The third child of Thomas and Mary Blackham, Frederic was born at Toadmoor, Heage, on 26th February 1862. He was baptised at St Luke’s Church, Heage, on 17th June but died the following day at 16 weeks old, and was buried in the churchyard of St Luke’s Church on 19th June.

Born on 9th November 1869, Henry, the fifth child of Thomas and Mary Blackham, was baptised at St Luke’s Church, Heage, on 4th January 1870 but died three days later. He was buried in the churchyard of St Luke’s Church on 9th January.

Born on 9th January 1871, George, the sixth child of Thomas and Mary Blackham, was baptised with his sister Sarah Anne at St Luke’s Church on 18th June 1871. He died on 29th April 1873 aged 2 and was buried in the churchyard of St Luke’s Church on 1st May.

Emily was born at Toadmoor, Heage, in March 1877 but died on 6th July aged 4 months and was buried in the churchyard at St Luke’s Church, Heage, on 8th July.

Born at Manchester towards the end of 1883, Frank was baptised at All Souls Church on 19th December. He died in July 1887 aged 3 and was buried in Philips Park Cemetery on 13th July.

The fourth child and first daughter of John and Mary Blackham, Susannah was born at Manchester towards the end of 1886. She was baptised on 29th December at All Souls Church, but died on 5th March 1888 aged 1, and was buried in Philips Park Cemetery on 8th March.

The seventh child of John and Mary Blackham, Edwin was born in Autumn 1890 but died within three months.

The ninth child of John and Mary Blackham, Mary was born towards the end of 1893 but died within six months.

The tenth child of John and Mary Blackham, Gertie was born in early 1896, but like their previous child she died within six months.

The eleventh child of John and Mary Blackham, Thomas was born in Autumn 1897 but died in early 1899 aged 1.

The twelfth child of John and Mary Blackham, Ethel was born in early 1899 but died in 1900 aged 1.

Frank was born on 28th January 1922 at 35 Oxford Street, East Kirkby, Nottinghamshire, together with his twin sister Ruby. However, Frank died at 17 days old and was buried in Kingsway Old Cemetery, Kirkby-in-Ashfield, on 16th February.

Elsie was born in the Spring of 1897 but died within 6 months.

Matthias was born at Liverpool in 1877 and married Nellie Gertrude Anderson (1878-1969) at St Matthias’ Church, Sneinton, on 9th November 1895. In early 1902, Nellie had a child who was named John Leslie Swain Blackham, but there is nothing to suggest that his father was Matthias. Around this time Matthias began to call himself John Blackham; he appears to have married Margaret Jane Neary (1872-1959), and their first of seven children was born in 1903. Meanwhile, Nellie remarried twice; first to John Henry Key in 1923, and then to Joseph Cobley in 1937. Matthias, known as John, died on 4th September 1953, aged 76.

Born in early 1902, John appears to have been the child of Nellie Gertrude Blackham (née Anderson), but there is nothing to suggest that his father was Matthias Blackham.

Rose Ann Blackham was born on 28th June 1855 at 15 Dorset Place, Masbrough, Yorkshire. On Christmas Day 1907, Rose married her cousin Samuel Blackham at St Peter’s Church, Belper, Derbyshire.

Born at Belper, Derbyshire, in January 1883, Samuel was baptised on 18th January at St Peter’s Church. On Christmas Day 1907, he married his cousin Rose Ann Blackham.

The son of John Sethcell and his wife Lydia (née Shipley), John was born at Tamworth, Staffordshire, on 23rd December 1890, where he was baptised on 18th January 1891. He married Celia Blackham on 7th November 1910 at St Thomas’ Church, Kimberworth, Yorkshire, and after her death in 1924, he married her widowed sister Harriet Parker (née Blackham) in 1926.

Born at Belper, Derbyshire, in the autumn of 1851, John became a nailer, and on 21st October 1873 he married Mary Ann Mellor (1842-1904) at St Alkmund’s Church, Duffield. Their son George Samuel Blackham was born towards the end of 1874 but died within 6 months. At the time of the April 1881 census, John and Mary Ann were living at Field Lane, Belper, but during the year they appear to have gone their separate ways. John, although still married to Mary Ann, married Eliza Ball (1865-1958) on 15th December 1881, declaring on his marriage certificate that he was still a bachelor. Their marriage was witnessed by John’s father and his third wife Leah (later to become Leah Mellor). Meanwhile, Mary Ann started to use her maiden name, and towards the end of 1882 she gave birth to a son who was named Sam Blackham, presumably because she was still married to John.

John Blackham died at Field Head, Belper, in January 1891 aged 39 and was buried at Belper Cemetery on 24th January. His widow Eliza went on to marry John’s cousin Joseph Blackham in 1893.

The daughter of Mary Mellor, Mary Ann was born at Holbrook, Derbyshire, in 1842. On 21st October 1873 she married John Blackham at St Alkmund’s Church, Duffield. Their son George Samuel Blackham was born towards the end of 1874 but died within 6 months. At the time of the April 1881 census, John and Mary Ann were living at Field Lane, Belper, but during the year they appear to have gone their seperate ways. John, although still married to Mary Ann, married Eliza Ball in December 1881, while Mary Ann started to use her maiden name. Towards the end of 1882 Mary gave birth to a son who she named Sam Blackham, presumably because she was still married to John, although Mary and Sam continued to use the surname Mellor.

In the afternoon of 8th January 1904 Mary was admitted to Belper Workhouse, being recorded as the widow of John Blackham. However, two days later in the evening of 10th January, Mary Ann died. She was buried on 13th January at Belper Cemetery. She was not buried in the same grave as John.
