William was born at Shepshed, Leicestershire, and moved with his family to Loughborough between 1832 and 1836. In 1840 the family moved to Ticknall where William’s father was employed as a gamekeeper on the Calke Abbey Estate.

On 12th January 1840 William and his friend John Atkin, both aged 15, were returning from work across Calke Park but never arrived home. It was first thought that the boys had run away from home, but a search was started and after a few days Sir George Crewe ordered his men to break the ice on one of the ponds in the parkland to drag the pond, when their bodies were found.

On their way home, the boys are believed to have gone sliding on Little Dog Kennel Pond, into which water from other ponds on the estate drained before being discharged over a weir into Big Dog Kennel Pond, the later now part of Staunton Harold Reservoir. The ice on this pond was thin, gave way, and the boys drowned.

William Hudson and John Atkin were buried side by side in a corner of Ticknall Churchyard on 17th January.

Hannah Hudson wrote a solemn poem in 1879 recalling the anguish William’s parents would have suffered during this event. The poem can be found here.

Sarah, the daughter of Samuel Cook and his wife Elizabeth (née Smith), was born at Little Hallam, Ilkeston, in 1851. Towards then end of 1870 she had a son who she named John James Fritchley Cook, and six years later, on 26th December 1876, she married John Hudson. At time time of their marriage, John was 20 and Sarah was 25. It is not clear whether John Hudson was the father of John James Fritchley Cook.

John Hudson’s death was recorded in the last quarter of 1888, but also in this quarter Sarah’s son William Wright Hudson was born, whose father appears to have been Samuel Wright, with whom she had another child, Joseph Wright Hudson, in 1891.

John, the son of Sarah Cook, was born at Little Hallam, Ilkeston, towards the end of 1870. His mother Sarah married John Hudson in 1876 and on the 1881 census John Cook was described as John Hudson’s son. However, when John Cook was born, John Hudson would have been 14 and his mother 21; they did not marry until 6 years later, when John was 20. John Hudson may not have been the father of John James Fritchley Cook - there is no connection to the name ‘Fritchley’ in John Hudson’s ancestry, so this may have been the surname of John Cook’s father.

Lucy, the daughter of Elizabeth Blake, was born in 1880. Her mother married Edwin Hudson two years later and although, like her mother, Lucy was recorded with the surname Hudson on the 1891 census, it is not known if Edwin was her father.

Frances, known as ‘Cissie’, was born at Catton, Derbyshire, on 4th August 1907. On 25th July 1942 she married Thomas (‘Tom’) Rodgers at St John the Baptist Church, Smalley. Frances died on 12th December 1993 and her ashes were placed in the Garden of Remembrance at Smalley.

Samuel Hudson was born at 10:20 p.m. on Sunday 6th October 1865 at 49 Ortzen Street, Forest, Nottingham, but died of measles on 15th December 1867 at 14 North Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. He was buried at 3 p.m. on Wednesday 18th December in Stanton Road Cemetery, Ilkeston.

Mary Eloisa Hudson was born at 5 a.m. on Saturday 25th April 1868 at 14 North Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. She was baptised on 14th June by the Reverend S. Stafford at the Primitive Methodist Chapel, Ilkeston. ‘Eloisa’ died on 9th October 1868 aged 5 months and was buried in Stanton Road Cemetery, Ilkeston, at 2 p.m. on Sunday 11th October.

Louisa Hudson was born at Shepshed, Leicestershire, in 1826, and was baptised at St Botolph’s Church on 8th October. She died on 30th September 1840 aged 14 and was buried in All Saint’s Churchyard, Loughborough, on 4th October 1840.

Thomas Hudson was born at Shepshed, Leicestershire, in 1832, and was baptised at St Botolph’s Church on 11th July. He died at the age of 7 and was buried in All Saint’s Churchyard, Loughborough, on 17th July 1839.

Thomas Hudson was born at Shepshed, Leicestershire, in 1798. He married Sarah Matilda Caldwell on 28th November 1821.

Sarah Matilda Caldwell was the daughter of Samuel Caldwell and his wife Mary (née Oldershaw). She was born at Hathern, Leicestershire, on 15th April 1800 and married Thomas Hudson on 28th November 1821. After the death of Thomas, Sarah married John Wootton on 4th August 1856 at St Peter's Church, Radford, Nottinghamshire.
