On Thursday last a woman named Knifton, wife of Robert Knifton, Parcel’s-terrace, Uttoxeter-road, Derby (who works at the Colour Works, Markeaton-lane), committed suicide by drowning herself in the Mill Dam, Markeaton-lane. A man, who was passing, saw her partially undress and jump into the water, and he jumped in to rescue her, but on catching hold of her dress it gave way and she went to the bottom, She was, however, got out in a few minutes, but life was found to be extinct before Dr. Taylor arrived. Her husband had not seen her since Tuesday evening, and they did not live happily together. An inquest was held on the body at three o’clock the same afternoon, before Mr. Coroner Vallack, when a verdict of “Found drowned” was returned. The deceased was 28 years of age.
