            |  Retired county official dies at  Allestree home    MR. JOHN KNIFTON, who  was on the staff of  Derbyshire County Council for  47 years, died at his home, 11  Gisborne Crescent, Allestree,  yesterday, aged 69.  Mr. Knifton, who was born  at Red Hill Farm, Makeney, the  third son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W.  Knifton, was one of the first  pupils at the Herbert-Strutt  School, Belper.  He joined the County Council  in 1914 as an assistant in the  Local Taxation Department and retired in 1961 from the position  of senior assistant.    IN THE MIDDLE EAST    During the 1914-18 War he  served with the Royal Horse  Artillery in the Middle East.  Mr. Knifton was a member  of Allestree Parochial Church  Council for 35 years and was  People’s Warden for four years.  For some years he was a  playing member of the Chevin  Golf Club. He leaves a widow.  |
