Williams sprints to AAU wins

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(UPI)—“Steve Williams,” said coach Jim Bush of national champion UCLA, “has talent he hasn’t even tapped.” Bush made his observation in the wake of Williams’ double sprint victory during the weekend in the national AAU track and field championships. The double was the first in the nationals since Ray Norton turned the trick way back in 1960.

Other winners at the AAU included world record holder Al Feuerbach in the shot (68-1), Cary Feldmann in the javelin (265-3), John Knifton in the three mile walk (21:36.4), John Craft in the triple jump (55-8¾), Maurice Wilkins in the discus (211-11), Mike Cotton in the pole vault (17-4), Ted Bregar in the hammer (215-4), Randy Williams in the long jump (26-1) and England’s Gordon Minty in the three mile (27:20.8).
